Project: Go Parallax!

Parallax is a JavaScript technique that allows you to move different elements of your site at different rates as you scroll.

Skills: HTML, CSS, JavaScript

Parallax is a JavaScript technique that allows you to move different elements of your site at different rates as you scroll. This might not sound so awesome, but the effects are nothing short of spectacular.

Parallax has actually been around for a while, but it had its big day in the sun about a year ago when Nike used it to for the wildly successful Nike Better World campaign.

The Nike Better World site is no longer up, but fortunately, there are tons of resources to help you get some Parallax going on your site.

1. Parallax Plugin, by Ian Lunn

2. Build a parallax scrolling website interface with jQuery and CSS, by Jonathan Nicol

3. Scrollorama, by John Polacek

4. Behind The Scenes Of Nike Better World, by Richard Shepherd

One сomment

  1. I predict that parallax scrolling will go the way of splash pages and rainbow bars.

Like splash pages, flash animations, rainbow bars and other 90’s paraphernalia, parallax scrolling was not designed in the name of usability, but in the name of glamour.

It’s really just a novelty and it won’t catch on.
