TAKE THE 3-MINUTE QUIZ

I Wrote The Code (with apologies to Barry Manilow)

Skillcrush Ode to Code

Love songs. Celebrating a love that is so passionate, so amazing that you have to SING about it!

I’m about to introduce you to our new, all-time favorite love song at Skillcrush. Now, before we introduce the song, we’re going to share the background of the story. Every song is made more meaningful when you know its origin story!

Skillcrush student Deb Levy is currently in the Web Developer Blueprint. A powerhouse stay-at-home mom living in NYC with two boys, ages 5 and 7 respectively, she’s been squeezing in Skillcrush lessons at all sorts of times of day. We regularly get (and answer) emails from Deb at 11 pm!

And we love it because we love Deb! She’s hilarious – on April Fools, she modified the HTML on the NY Times homepage and let her partner believe that she made it to the front page!

But this last stunt of Deb’s is the one for the history books.

She wrote a love song. To code.

It’s called, “I wrote the code” and is set to the tune of Barry Manilow’s, “I write the songs.”

I Wrote The Code (with apologies to Barry Manilow)

I said it’s now or never
And I wrote my very first code
I put the tags and selectors all together
I can program
And I wrote the code

I wrote the code that made my web site gel
I wrote the CSS and HTML
I wrote the code that makes the nav bar work
I wrote the code, I wrote the code

My site’s up on the Interweb
And I’ve got my own cool URL
Now when I type my domain name
A page appears, and I think that it looks swell

I wrote the code that made my web site gel
I wrote the CSS and HTML
I wrote the code that makes the nav bar work
I wrote the code, I wrote the code

Oh, my coding is not complex, but the design has some nice effects
And I wrote some JavaScript, that you can use
My web site’s on the screen, it’s the first step to be seen
It’s from me, it’s for you
It’s for you, it’s from me
It’s a world wide web story

I wrote the code that made my web site gel
I wrote the CSS and HTML
I wrote the code that makes the nav bar work
I wrote the code, I wrote the code

I wrote the code that made my web site gel
I wrote the CSS and HTML
I wrote the code that makes the nav bar work
I wrote the code, I wrote the code

It’s my web site and I wrote the code

And make sure to listen to the vocal performance of I Wrote The Code, masterfully sung by Deb’s friend Kyle Forester. A dead ringer for Mr. Manilow himself!

Laughing? Inspired? Yeah, us too! Check out Deb’s gorgeous online portfolio, and try to spot the JavaScript!
