My first freelance job was pretty green.

Like many first-timers, I charged about 25% of what the project was worth, I spent hours toiling alone instead of asking for help, and – this is the confession part – I used an adapted contract I found online.

Zoinks!

At Skillcrush, we are always trying to help readers crack the code on freelancing – from inspiration on how to start a side hustle or take your gig full-time, to the nitty gritty of how to up your rates as you gain experience and navigate tricky client relationships.

But when I got that first freelance job, I’d spent so much energy worrying about landing the gig that I forgot to think about the logistics. Namely, the contract.

And I don’t think I’m alone. Most of the Skillcrush team coughed up some pretty homespun-looking first contracts when it came time for our webinar on legal dos and don’ts.

I get it! Lawyers are expensive! And sometimes in the freelance world, quick turnarounds make waiting on a lawyer to draft up a contract feel as old-fashioned as (gasp!) resorting to the postal service for correspondence.

But as Basha Rubin, founder and CEO of Priori Legal, said in our webinar on the topic, a poorly written contract is NOT better than no contract at all.

It’s true that freelancing can open up big opportunities (it has for me!), but it’s important to do it the right way and protect yourself and your client from legal foibles. Besides, if you’re going to be up past midnight worrying about jQuery, do you want to have to panic about your non-solicitation clause too?

Don’t worry, I didn’t know what that was before I read this guide either. Don’t act like a newb – get your legal ducks in a row with our FREE Ultimate Guide to Freelance Contracts.

Almost all the freelancers work on hourly base and it is important to track their working time to send a precise invoice for their work.
